Lymphatic Cancer Symptoms

Lymphatic cancer attacks the cells of the lymphatic system in the body, which are housed in the immune system. This type of cancer occurs when normal cells in the lymphatic system transform to abnormal cells and start multiplying rapidly. When a person is diagnosed with this type of cancer, it is essential to get treatment immediately to prevent the cancer from progressing. Lymph node cancer is also called as lymphatic cancer or lymphoma.

The symptoms of lymphatic cancer vary from person to person and may easily be confused with noncancerous conditions.

Folowing are the potential lymphatic cancer symptoms :

•The most common sign of cancer cells in the lymph nodes is that one or more of the lymph nodes becomes large or feels hard. However, if there are only a small number of cells in the lymph nodes, they may feel quite normal and it is only possible to tell that a cancer is present by removing part, or all, of the lymph node and examining the cells in a laboratory. It is important to remember that lymph nodes can be enlarged for other reasons, such as infections.

• In non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the swelling may arise in the abdomen. Some lymphoma patients complain of persistent or recurrent fever, night sweats, fatigue and weight loss. Sometimes, itching of the skin (pruritus) marks the early stages of Hodgkin’s disease and other lymphatic cancers.

• Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is one of several types of cancers of the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are structures in the body that carry white blood cells and fight infections and disease. Lymphatic cancers can occur anywhere in the body because there are lymph nodes all over the body. Most people think there are only lymph nodes in the neck, armpits and groin. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma differs from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in that the latter occurs almost exclusively in people over 40 and the cure rate is signifigantly less, although the symptoms are very similar.

• There is a persistant cough and/or chest pain. The lymph nodes in the neck and/or armpits become swollen. Weight loss, night sweats, fever, weakness and fatigue are common symptoms.

• Other lymphatic  cancer symptoms may include fatigue, night sweats, fever, weight loss and swelling of lymph nodes in the chest, neck, armpits and groin.

• If lymphoma involves the lymphatic tissue of the thymus, the gland located in front of the heart, it may cause chest pain. In addition, an enlarged thymus may press on nearby structures such as the trachea (windpipe) or superior vena cava (SVC), the large vein that carries blood from the head and arms back to the heart.

• Pressure on the trachea can lead to coughing, fatigue, shortness of breath, and other respiratory difficulties.

• As lymphomas progress and cancerous lymphocytes spread beyond the lymphatic system, the body loses its ability to fight infections. The generalized symptoms that develop may be confused with influenza, other infections, such as infectious mononucleosis, tuberculosis, or other cancers.

Diagnosis

The definitive sign of lymphatic cancer symptoms comes from taking a biopsy of a swollen lymph node and finding abnormal or cancerous cells when this tissue sample is viewed under a microscope.
